Getting a bit of heckling from Wetty, and thinking about it. 12 months without a lap and won't get a chance to ride before the meeting! Will give her some fresh fluids during the week and at least see if she starts.

I am pretty tempted to do the last round at GP circuit. What class could I run my 04 R1 in? Any of you guys going to be at the trackday on this saturday (27th)? So I could ask you a few questions?

    Cheers

I think there might be a few TT members going on Saturday. There are heaps more of us going on Sunday (thread here: http://tarmactalk.com/forum/showthre...smsp-GP-circut )

Feel free to ask questions here. Racing is unreal fun, and every serious track day rider should have a crack at least once! I did a bit of a write up on what to do at your first race meet here: http://tarmactalk.com/forum/showthre...-2-Marshy-Help!

Thanks Marshy, was a good read! Lots of info in there, it's the little things like grid position that would mess with me. You never even see the row markings at a trackday... I wouldn't even know where to start when it comes to questions, but I'll pester away. For instance, are the rows marked clearly?

They are, watch any race video that's been posted here and you can see the markers on the side of the track. Best thing ever... I'm yet to get my slot wrong so it's probably idiot proof too.

I write down on tape and put on the tank my grid position, row and draw lines for the positions across and underline my one. I don't trust myself to remember it for a whole warm up lap! I was in a garage a long way from race control - it's a farking long walk to get up there for your number and back, especially when you are X entered and have one race period to get it all done.

Hahah, Phat3R, that's pretty much what I was thinking. Nerves would already be at an all time high coming up to first race. Tape on tank, great idea! Nelso, will you be doing scrutineering? I'm on an 04 red R1 if you see me say hello!

By the way, was there ever a part 2 to that guide Marshy?

    Cheers

Nope, as the subsequent comments covered some stuff I didn't get to. But I really should finish it off at some point

Well, the first half was very helpful, so thanks there! Now if I were to enter into two classes, unlimited and unlimited clubsport, does that mean twice the cost of entry?

Cheaper for second class. If it's your first event though I would suggest doing only 1 as it all happens real quick

Nope, they charge you a 'cross enter fee' that used to be something like $75... no idea what it is these days though.

I agree, one would be more than enough, just hoping to dip my toes in the water as it is. How does the day work out? ie, one qualifying session of how long, then how many races of how many laps etc? Sorry for the probably obvious questions!

If you click on the link below and have a good read of the document it should answer a bunch of your initial questions, and then provide you with a whole bunch more to ask.....

    http://www.stgeorgemcc.com/pg_roadracepdf.php?id=u2u2t2

Seriously, this is your best starting point to get an idea of what may happen on the 8th and 9th November at SMP

  38. #88
For $75 I'd cross enter just to get some extra practice before qually of whatever event you choose to take 'seriously'... hell, I'd even do all the starts as practice!! Then maybe finish the lap and pull into the pits. Almost cheaper than going to the drags and a lot more fun.

As long as you are organised tho ed. Remember my first race meet? I was the proverbial headless chook and pumping adrenalin all day
    Life's too Short- YOLO!

  40. #90
Hmm, they are both god points. How much time is there between the different classes etc? I'm assuming they wouldn't run classes that have a chance of cross entering back to back? Or is it just a luck of the draw thing?

I guess for another $75 it then becomes 6 races and 2 qualifying sessions, so definitely better value for money. But then again, you don't race bikes because it's cheap.

  41. #91
Some are back to back depending on classes entered but even if they're one race between, it's only a 5 lap race and by the time you put warmers on and fuel in, that race has gone pretty quick. My first race weekend was both classes at smsp in February this year, I did all races and felt fine. At least you're only throwing $75 away if you can't handle the extra laps.

  42. #92
The $75 makes it tempting as you get soooo much more.

There is a one race gap between races for the 600's makes it all a bit rushed. Especially when it's your first time, need to find out where you finished to get your starting grid position, race timing is running late, shit I forgot to put in fuel, where's the funnel ... etc ... . Certainly leaves little time for anything else like socialising.

I felt like it turned it from something that was suppose to be fun into a bit of a job. Three races, practice / qually is plenty for me in the future, assuming I can remember how to ride.

  43. #93
I reckon the $75 is worth it just for the extra practice and quali sessions in the morning, especially on a track you don't ride all the time (like the North circuit, or Broadford). Then if you're fading during the day (or running out of tyres etc), just drop your non-points scoring class). Besides, it's the absolute cheapest track time in $$ per lap terms you'll ever get!!!

Yes but you were trying to do both classes till the end... hahahaha And to be honest, you did a hell of a good job! What I'm suggesting is to just take one seriously and use the other one as practice, especially for race starts!

I know I'm preaching to the converted but for those who have not raced yet, on a 5 lap race your start+1st lap is almost 50% of your result. So if you can practice those, I reckon there's a LOT of value in those $75.

But yeah, you do bring another good point... if zoidberg can arrange someone to lend a hand (aka pit bitch) that makes a world of difference, especially with it being your first race weekend. In the end, what gets you are the little things like forgetting to fill up, not having enough time to go get the race results sheet between races, adjusting tire pressures and etc. So bringing a mate or 2 is REALLY good.

The st g weekends are not too bad as a few guys do both classes so they are spaced at least 1 race apart. Worst I had was Fxrrc where the 2 classes were back to back on different bikes. Helping hands like ed are a must

Yeah a pit bitch that knew what they were doing would make it a dream come true for race days.

Come in throw the bike at them to sort out warmers, pressures, grid position on tank, fuel top up, soy latte ... wait wait ... maybe that last one's going too far ?
