    Phat3R gets an R6..... finally!

So after persevering with that bulbous Suzuki for long enough, Rick has finally seen the light and decided to join the cool kids on an R6!!

This is the build thread for his bike, to get the blood pumping for him while he's stuck over in mining-central, Perth.

Picked it up. It's an 09 model, but plated 08. Gotta love those ones. Ultra-minimal damage, as you can see. Only a couple of light scratches.

    Now, let's get nekked....

First thing is always an Annitori quickshifter.....

Decided to put the plug under the seat too, for ease of access.

Airbox off, pesky smog gear removed:

    K&N filer, cleaned and oiled:

    More to come soon.....

(Really it's because I don't have any here, even though I had that block-off rubber thingy for the airbox left over from a previous set. Without that, I would've had to order some and wait).

Gotta treat yourself after spending 3months in WA!

Oh course I'll be first to know when you are looking to sell and get rid of your spares, right?

Last chance in Nov for me as D grader to win some sort of plastic trophy. To stand a chance against the current field, little old slow coach me will need as many UA's as pozzible. Once I get put into C grade I'll never see a shiny plastic mug again!

Spares!!! I keep using them all for rebuilds mate! The eBay HK option for fairing stay has gone to arbitration after 3 months no supply. If you do need GIXA fairings, I've got several sets in varying states of prettyness.

Congrats on the new ride Rick!! Nice knowing you, I'll wave as you lap me.

Perhaps there should be a seperate class for UA's. You can all cheat together!

    Yes. I am jealous.

Congrats Rick, shame you didn't get to use it at the creek and the race meet!

Mate I am going to miss our battles ... You gotta go R6 UA too.

You will probably still beat me off the starts as I am working out how to get the damn front wheel back on the ground. Once I got the front back down on the ground on R2 on Sat all I could think was well I farked that up, plan B, quick follow James as he cuts through the field ... I reckon you made up 15 places off the start, I was right behind you trying to keep up. ;-)

  21. #21
Nick you are a machine , at this rate it will be finished yesterday, and I will be eying cheap Friday flights at work. .

Rode to work today for the first time, foot feels OK, but can't easily load the outer peg on left handerz, when on ball of foot, without shot of pain to remind me that wasn't a good idea. So good to get back on 2 wheels again.

It's O Week at Uni this week, and OMG there are some amazing sights to behold!

  22. #22
It's coming along nicely. More work today. Exhaust is off, in preparation for the mid-pipe. Race tyres are fitted and balanced. Rear shock is out, ready for some revalving and Ohlins goodness. Ditto the forks. Did an oil and filter change, and fitted EC gearing. The OEM clipons are off, and race ones will go on shortly. Oh, and fitted a Superbike Source radiator guard! (It's the little things, the attention to detail....)

    What rear sets are those???

Superbike Source. They are actually quite impressive, I reckon. Lots of adjustment, and very strong. Spilly tested a set recently, and they survived incredibly well - the peg ground down and bent on the bolt a bit, but nothing snapped off and it saved the bike from more serious damage. I haven't been advertising them, because in an ideal world I'd design them with more grip on the very outer edge of the peg. But I've come from Vortex, where the pegs rip holes in your boot (and shins in the garage!), so I like a very grippy peg. Easily fixed with replacement pegs, though. Or often people reckon they're fine as is.

So, back to it tonight. Rear shock is rebuilt, resprung (a bit heavy, but it'll do until the new one arrives), and back in the bike. Rear wheel back on. Then lockwire, lockwire and more lockwire.

Forgot to show the rear shock being rebuilt and valved....

Mid-pipe is on, and the exhaust back in the bike (and what a job that was! One header didn't want to seat properly, but it's all good now). Fired it up and it sounds unreal!!!!

I've been putting off doing the forks, because it's very involved, but I got started today. Putting in the Ohlins valves was going great, until I couldn't find one key shim I needed.....

    I give up for today....

Soooooo, after an extended delay while I ordered more shims (and put off getting back into it - I was distracted by my Italian mistress), the forks are done!! And back in the bike. Whilst they were out and the access was good, I added braided lines, in a rather fetching red colour.

I've done some sneaky internal mods to the forks to give it more working travel, and some tricky valving tweaks. They feel simply unreal bouncing them on the floor. Heaps better than the similar ones in the 2010.

The right side clip-on is on (and drilled for the throttle and switchblock locating nipples). It's almost ready for some new clothes!

Ohhhh bike porn .... Marshy you are a miracle worker.

  35. #35
Honestly, I just can't stress enough how good the forks feel!! I'm super-super impressed (if I do say so myself, although I'm not praising my own work, but rather the Ohlins valves and the new shims, and the combo of spring/valve/stack that just works).

Riding the CBR600RR at Barbagello last week has made me realise just how underpowered my Gixxa has been, (but also how good the suspension was after Marshy refreshed it).

I suspect I'll have to totally rework all my braking markers ... just going around all gentle like for two days getting a handle on all that powa ...
