takes a bit of time to build from scratch but once I have the CNC up and running, I will make some aluminium ones up with a bit more trick looks...

Interesting! Have you done much spraying? Would you say the wrapping was easier or harder to get a good finish?
What about cost? Was it more or less than a spray to do the vinyl?
I think the vinyl is certainly a better finish than some rattle can Be interested to know if it takes that much longer...

IMO prep is close, if it's ruff under the wrap, it's going to show it!
It's cleaner to wrap than painting, (overspray etc) and don't need tools just a heat gun really.
I think wrap will have some good longevity with stone chips, as paint and fibreglass chip easy.
Will be easy to repair just a section (add a new sticker) when the next off happens.
IMO of your after a top job, you cannot beat proper paint thought a gun, but it's not cheap.
I think it's cost me $200 to wrap all the bike with knifeless tape, how would that be against rattle can job, am not sure, but it's fun to try something I haven't done before

I've had the same fairings now since 2012 and done them many ways.
Painted properly by someone else, painted cheaply by someone else, painted by myself, wrapped by someone else and wrapped twice by myself, pretty much in that order.

When i painted the bike myself(with rattle cans, albeit good quality colour matched paint and 2 pack clear acrylic in a can) i was blown away by how much prep and effort goes into it.
Particularly when you're an anal fuck and you end up cutting back all of the orange peel out of the clear.

I was happy with the result but when i looked at wrapping it opened up a whole new world of colour possibilities.
Its much easier to get fancy with different colours in different area's etc.

At the end of the day you still need to do a really good base prep. Even when wrapping now i clean the panels up and hit them with 3 or 4 coats of etch primer and then sand the f**k out of them to get them as smooth as possible.
Etch primer has great adhesion to fibreglass and sets incredibly hard. Vinyl wrap also loves sticking to it.

As Lee says, the wrap doesn't lie, but it does help you not give a shit so much if there is a bit underneath that doesn't look great, for me, thats because the overall picture looks so much better. 20/20 rule etc.
Cost wise i think the difference between methods was as follows

    A1 Racepaint- $750 inc. freight
Someone else - $350.00 (really poorly matched colour, lazy work)
Me spraying it- Around $ 600. Lots of work, lots of mess, and the spray in my lungs and nose really got in the way of my cigarette smoking for a while.
Someone else wrapping it- $ 800 inc. material
Me wrapping it- Around $ 350.00 and a shitload of hours.

After having done it a few times i think wrap is definitely the way to go for me.
Sort of got it worked out now and getting more efficient at it each time.

If anybody wants some parts wrapped i'm ready to have a hack.

I have some new raceglass that I have been planning on painting at some stage, was thinking of either buying (haha, borrowing off a mate) airbrush and compressor, rattle canning, or was considering wrapping, but will probably go down the wrap route looking at those results! Looks amazing, thanks for the post!

I've never done a Carby balance before, mostly because my bikes have injectors but is it tricky? What's involved?

A little bit fiddly but straight forward enough. I will do a write up on it after this weekend when I pull the covers off again.

Don't rev the motor with the balancer hooked up, you will suck up the fluid through the carbies and that will be the end of you day in the shed until more fluid arrives.....Iv been there once before
Oh and its easy.. pretty much set idle, hook up vacuum lines to carbies, adjust screws........

Speak up if i am wrong

Or get a unit that doesn't use fluid so you don't have that problem

The carbtune unit uses rods rather than liquid specifically designed for that issue

In the interest of Marshy's call to post stuff

After a year of racing and coping a knee slider to boot it was time to repaint my fairing,
I was able to buy a cheap set off a fellow racer and paint them, I'll be using this set for track days and keep the repainted much lighter "racers edge" set for racing
    slidersmall.jpg02.jpg

spare set, I practiced my painting skills on these...pretty ordinary job, but looks good from a distance
    P1090039.JPG

repainted and stickered racers edge set, still waiting for more sticker stripes to arrive
got to love my $60 painting booth from Bunnings lol
